Every month I get some version of the same message: "Karen, do I put this before or after that?" This month, I decided to answer it properly — because September's Signature TOYL box is all about layering and we're layering the products your skin needs at this time of year as the seasons transition

Why Layering Actually Matters

Our midlife skin needs two things: hydration and actives.

Hydration is your water — it plumps, softens, and preps skin to actually receive what comes next.

Actives are your ingredients with a job to do — brightening, renewing, barrier-strengthening.

Layer them in the wrong order, and the good stuff
sits on top going nowhere. Layer them well, and each step earns its place.

The rule of thumb: thinnest to thickest.
Water-based first, oil-based last. Everything else follows from that one sentence.

It's the most potent step in the box, so it goes on first, straight after your mist, onto skin that's still a little damp.

But to be clear, this is ONLY a night product, so you can't use this during the day, it just won't work as well.

Skøn NiacinBalance Face Oil RRP £34.80

This is a barrier-support oil built on grapeseed, argan and baobab, with an oil-soluble form of vitamin B3 (niacinamide) doing the real work of strengthening and calming. This one goes on last in any routine it's part of (day OR night) — oils always finish a routine because nothing absorbs through oil once it's down. Two or three drops, warmed between your palms, pressed rather than rubbed in.
Why not layer them together: the elixir is working hard at a cellular level and wants clear access to freshly hydrated skin; the oil's job is to seal moisture in and calm the barrier.
Put the oil down first and the elixir can't get through it. Use both in one sitting and you're diluting the whole point of each. So alternate — elixir on your "treatment" nights, oil on your "barrier and glow" nights.
Three or four times a week each is a good place to start, adjusting to how your skin feels.

Does This Go With This?

Order is one question. Whether two products belong in the same routine at all is another — and it's the one I get asked most, so here's the straight answer for every pairing in the box.
Murad Cleansing Cream + Pixi Milky Mist — yes, always. These two are a fixed pair. Cleanser goes on, comes off, mist goes straight on after. There's no version of this routine where they're not together.
Pixi Milky Mist + Gatineau Elixir — yes. The mist is there to prep skin so the elixir has something hydrated to work into. Always mist first, elixir second.
Pixi Milky Mist + Skøn Face Oil — yes. Same logic — mist first for hydration, oil last to seal it in.
Gatineau Elixir + Skøn Face Oil — no, not in the same sitting. This is the one to remember. Both are "finishing" products in their own right — the elixir is a potent treatment, the oil is a barrier-sealer —
and putting the oil on top of the elixir blocks it before it's had a chance to do anything. This isn't a safety issue, it's a waste issue: you'd be layering two products that are fighting for the same job. Pick
one per night.
