Every month I get some version of the same message: "Karen, do I put this before or after that?" This month, I decided to answer it properly — because September's Signature box is all about layering and we're layering the products your skin needs at this time of year as the seasons transition. Gentle cleansing, soft oils and nighttime repair as well as that all important hydration. This box is worth over £170.
Layering isn't complicated. But because brands don't usually tell us the order, the timing, or — most importantly — which products are supposed to share a routine and which ones need their own moment it's often left to us to guess. So that's what this one's about. No jargon, no ten-step Korean routine you'll abandon by Thursday. Just: what goes where, how much, how long to wait before the next layer, and why.
Here's the thing I want you to take away before anything else: your skincare is a rota, not a recipe. A recipe means every ingredient goes in, every time, in one go. A rota means different products get their turn on different days, depending on what your skin needs. Some of what's in this box isn't meant to be used daily. That's deliberate, not a gap in your routine.
Our midlife skin needs two things: hydration and actives.
Hydration is your water — it plumps, softens, and preps skin to actually receive what comes next.
Actives are your ingredients with a job to do — brightening, renewing, barrier-strengthening. Layer them in the wrong order, and the good stuff sits on top going nowhere. Layer them well, and each step earns its place.
The rule of thumb: thinnest to thickest. Water-based first, oil-based last. Everything else follows from that one sentence. The inbox brochure will tell you exactly how much to use

Every routine, morning and night, starts here. This is a cream cleanser that lathers gently and contains lactic acid — a mild exfoliating acid that lifts away dulling, dead skin cells while it cleanses, so you're not scrubbing on top of a separate exfoliating step. Apricot kernel and starflower (borage) oils are woven through the formula too, so it cleans without stripping — important for skin that's had a summer of sun, air conditioning, and travel to contend with.

This is your first layer of hydration, and it matters more than most of us give it credit for. This milky hydrating mist is built around hyaluronic acid which draws moisture into the skin, alongside black oat and a B-vitamin complex to soothe. Think of it as re-wetting the canvas before you paint on it — everything you apply afterwards will absorb better onto skin that's had this first hit of hydration rather than skin that's bone dry from cleansing.
This is where the rota really comes into its own, and it's the bit I most want to be clear about: the Gatineau elixir and the Skøn face oil are not a same-night pairing. They're two different tools for two different jobs, and your skin does better when it gets one at a time.

This is a concentrated overnight treatment, built around a marine active (Cellynkage), plus artichoke leaf, hibiscus and a sophora-kiwi complex, working together on firmness, tone and the appearance of fine lines while you sleep. It's the most potent step in the box, so it goes on first, straight after your mist, onto skin that's still a little damp. But to be clear, this is ONLY a night product, so you can't use this during the day, it just won't work as well.
This is a barrier-support oil built on grapeseed, argan and baobab, with an oil-soluble form of vitamin B3 (niacinamide) doing the real work of strengthening and calming. This one goes on last in any routine it's part of (day OR night) — oils always finish a routine because nothing absorbs through oil once it's down. Two or three drops, warmed between your palms, pressed rather than rubbed in.
Why not layer them together: the elixir is working hard at a cellular level and wants clear access to freshly hydrated skin; the oil's job is to seal moisture in and calm the barrier. Put the oil down first and the elixir can't get through it. Use both in one sitting and you're diluting the whole point of each. So alternate — elixir on your "treatment" nights, oil on your "barrier and glow" nights. Three or four times a week each is a good place to start, adjusting to how your skin feels.
Order is one question. Whether two products belong in the same routine at all is another — and it's the one I get asked most, so here's the straight answer for every pairing in the box.
Murad Cleansing Cream + Pixi Milky Mist — yes, always. These two are a fixed pair. Cleanser goes on, comes off, mist goes straight on after. There's no version of this routine where they're not together.
Pixi Milky Mist + Gatineau Elixir — yes. The mist is there to prep skin so the elixir has something hydrated to work into. Always mist first, elixir second.
Pixi Milky Mist + Skøn Face Oil — yes. Same logic — mist first for hydration, oil last to seal it in.
Gatineau Elixir + Skøn Face Oil — no, not in the same sitting. This is the one to remember. Both are "finishing" products in their own right — the elixir is a potent treatment, the oil is a barrier-sealer — and putting the oil on top of the elixir blocks it before it's had a chance to do anything. This isn't a safety issue, it's a waste issue: you'd be layering two products that are fighting for the same job. Pick one per night.

This last one isn't part of the face routine at all, and it isn't from the theme — it's a gift from me and the wonderful team at OatSoak.
After a long, hot summer of sun exposure, it's not just your face that's had enough. Your skin all over often needs a proper reset — and that's exactly what OatSoak is for. It's a 100% natural colloidal oatmeal bath soak, made in small batches in Carmarthenshire, Wales, from a single ingredient: Avena Sativa (oat) kernel flour. No fragrance, no dyes, nothing else added.
Colloidal oatmeal has been used for generations to calm skin that's dry, itchy, tight, or sun-stressed — it forms a light, protective layer on the skin that helps lock moisture in, working long after you've stepped out of the bath and patted dry.
I hope you love this September box!
